Obituary

Arlene Hudson ~ Nov. 13, 1943 – April 24, 2022

Arlene Hudson, 78, lost her struggle with bone cancer, passing away the morning of April 24, 2022.

She was born November 13, 1943, in Buhl, Idaho, to parents Georgia Hilty Schmidt and Raymond Schmidt, the fourth of five children. She thoroughly enjoyed growing up in her small farming community of Clover, Idaho, and spent an active childhood with a robust mix of work and play. She could weed out the crops or milk cows with the best of them.

After graduating from Filer, Idaho High School, Arlene went forward and was successful in all her jobs – some menial, some meaningful.

When she moved to Santa Cruz County, California, her true calling presented itself. It was newspaper advertising. Starting as a legal clerk, she soon was promoted to advertising manager, and from that, never looked back. She worked at four different newspapers, each time earning a promotion, always from her reputation as a class A professional.

Arlene loved life and new experiences and was ready for fun. She and her husband, Merlin, took road trips with their old cars, covering all the western states except Alaska. Once, she drove one of the old cars herself, with Merlin trying desperately to keep up.

Growing up her family life revolved around the Clover Lutheran Church and school. Family devotions and prayer followed each evening meal. Faith was always and forever central to her life. She was passionate about sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and could always be found in the early mornings reading her Bible, listening to hymns, or viewing an online sermon from a favorite pastor. Secure in her eternal home, she confronted cancer with resolution and grace, ultimately choosing palliative care and facing her final months with her beloved husband, family, and close friends.

She will be remembered as a spirited woman of strong convictions, always putting the needs and problems of others before her own. A classy lady with a warm, disarming smile who knew how to dress and take charge of a room.

She is survived by her husband, Merlin, and her children: Tracy and Rudy Mendoza, Erik Hudson and Kelly David, D.C. and Elaine Hannah, and Justin and Karina Hannah. She leaves five grandsons: Nico, Quinn, Joseph, Isaac, and Cody, and one great-grandson: Easton. She is also survived by her siblings: June, Doris, Wayne, and Louise and many nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and friends.

Services are planned for Saturday, May 14, at 2 pm at Corralitos Community Church, 21 Browns Valley Road. Mehl’s Colonial Chapel has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
