With immense sadness we announce the passing of Florencia Chavoya Ponce after a brief illness on December 4, 2020, in Watsonville, CA. Florencia was born in San Pedro Tesistan, Jalisco, Mexico, on November 07, 1925. She immigrated to the United States at a young age working in the fields of Lompoc and Watsonville, CA and later at JCPenney’s and Fords Department Stores in Watsonville.
She was a compassionate, hard working woman who always put family first as evidenced by her dedication to her parents, Cirilo and Tomasita, her siblings, and her niece, Teresita. She was devout to her Catholic faith and in addition to keeping a beautiful altar in her home in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, she also taught catechism to children preparing for First Communion.
Florencia was an accomplished Mexican folklorico dancer/director who shared the love of her culture with her students and family. She is survived by her niece Teresita, and her nephew/godson Rogelio (Roy) Chavoya and family, and numerous nieces and nephews in Mexico and the United States. In the words of her family “Tia Lencha taught us the value of unconditional love.” Rest in Peace. May her memory be a blessing to us all.
