Ken Richards passed away peacefully at home, Sunday, June 13, 2021, in Santa Cruz, California at the age of 69. He leaves behind his loving wife Maya (Amelia) Richards of 44 years, daughters, Karissa (Jason) Keen, and Kathryn (Jeffrey) Hook, and grandchildren, Jianna, Jenna, Kenny, and Andrew. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe, and Doris Richards, brothers, Jack, and Joe Richards, and mother-in-law, Marcella Jurnet.
Ken lived his life in the Santa Cruz and Monterey County areas and graduated from Watsonville High School in 1970. Ken was an athlete most of his life. He played high school sports including football, basketball, and track. After high school, he was on the Santa Cruz Rebels rugby team that hosted and played several teams from foreign countries. He was also an avid basketball player and was a part of multiple leagues throughout his life.
Ken worked for PG&E for 38 years. He started his career in the Santa Cruz gas department, then moved to the Salinas electrical division and ended his career as a manager of the Watsonville PG&E yard, like his father. He served as a union representative and was a lead on the joint task force for the implementation of the rubber glove work technique for PG&E. In retirement, Ken took up hiking in Yosemite, Mt. Whitney, and the John Muir Trail, fishing in Alaska, and being a season ticket holder for the San Francisco Giants.
Ken was a kind, fun-loving, outgoing person with an infectious laugh. Family, friends, and having fun were very important to Ken. Whether he was traveling with Maya, walking on the beach with the kids, or hanging at home he lived life to the fullest. He was always there to support, listen, and lend a hand in the time of need and would do anything for those that he loved. He will be greatly missed.
Services will be held on Monday, June 21, 2021, at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel in Watsonville from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm.
