Ponciano I. Hernandez of Watsonville, 96 years old, died peacefully on April 16, 2022, in his home surrounded by family.
Ponciano was born on November 19, 1925, to parents Pedro and Jovita Hernandez in Woodlake, California. He completed the 7th grade until he joined his family working as a Bracero picking stone fruit, cotton, and lettuce.
Shortly after the Hernandez family moved to their ranch in Prunedale, CA., Ponciano was drafted to serve in WW2. Upon his return home, he met the love of his life, Antonia Patiño, in the lettuce field. They married and moved to Watsonville to raise their family. He enjoyed crafting pottery, gardening, traveling to Reno, NV, and dancing to Country Western music.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Antonia, two daughters; Bertha Smith, Marina Mendez, and two sons; Johnny Joe and Miguel Hernandez. He is survived by his sons; Ponciano, Jr., Edward, Henry, Peter, George, Carlos, Joey, Jessie, and Salvador Hernandez, and his daughters; Luana Padilla, Trinethe Garcia, Christina Romero, Marisela Peixoto, and Katrina Arizpe. He also leaves behind his sisters; Mary Sanchez, Mary Lou Preciado, Teresa Baisa, and Cecilia Choate, and 36 grandchildren, 79 great grandchildren, and 23 great great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel 222 E. Lake Avenue, on Thursday, April 28, 2022, from 5pm to 9pm, with rosary starting at 7pm. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church 721 Main Street, on Friday, April 29, 2022, at 10am with burial to follow at Valley Public Cemetery 2445 E. Lake Avenue at 11am.
