William H. Smith, Jr.

May 3, 1943 ~ October 10, 2020 (age 77)

Obituary

Bill was the first child of Captain William H. Smith, Sr., and Elizabeth Smith.  He was born May 3, 1943, in Watsonville, Ca.  He attended St. Francis and Notre Dame Elementary schools and Mora Catholic High School where he was active in student government, basketball and baseball.

Bill attended Santa Clara University receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and later a Masters Degree in Justice Administration.

Bill worked for many years as a juvenile probation officer for Monterey County and was a partner in Smith and Matulich Produce Co.  Later Bill founded California Offender Program Services, a diversion program for at-risk youth.  He was its director for over 20 years.

Bill’s true joys were his adored daughters, Courtney and Kelly.  He was a devoted father and loved watching them participate in their many sporting events over the years.  He was married to their mother, Roberta for 35 years.  Bill was an especially proud and doting grandfather to his grandsons, Benjamin and Gunnar.  He never tired of hearing of their constant shenanigans.

His love of sports, especially football, was known to all.  He was an avid 49er faithful for many years.  His daughter, Courtney, was his partner in crime.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his siblings, Helen Vajretti, Daniel Smith (Wendy), Richard Smith (Wendy), Joyce Fagon, and his many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  His daughters, Courtney Heffernan (Leo) of Aptos, Kelly Mundy (Brian) of West Hills, and grandsons, Benjamin and Gunnar Mundy.
